Studio Membership

Since opening in March of 2021, Mud Slinger Studio has focused on art show production, custom orders, and teaching both individual & group classes. After many requests, we have shifted our class offerings to a membership model - allowing for more self-paced, hands-on time with the clay. Instructional time is offered for many hours throughout the week, as well as open studio time for individual project work & practice. Whether you're brand new to clay - or have been slinging mud for a while - we'd love for Mud Slinger Studio to be your new creative home!

Membership Details

  • Each membership comes with a full shelf to store your pottery pieces, clay, tools, etc.

  • Memberships activate the day of purchase and renews the same day every consecutive month.

  • Members can change membership levels (up or down) and add (if available) or delete extra shelf space with a 5-day written (email) notice prior to your monthly renewal day.

  • We get it that life changes! Memberships are cancellable with a 15-day written notice (an email to us 15 days prior to your monthly renewal day). Your shelf must be cleared by the final day of your membership. Any supplies or work left will be forfeited.

Homeschool Membership Details

  • Level A membership is required.

  • Ages 8+ are welcome.

  • While you are welcome to any instructional times (within your level limit), all homeschoolers are encouraged to join us during the Wednesday mornings that are dedicated to homeschoolers only.

  • While hand building is the main focus, each student will also have a personalized introduction to throwing on the wheel (during the Wednesday dedicated Homeschoolers instructional time).

  • Homeschoolers under the age of 14 - that join in open studio time - are required to hand build only. Homeschoolers age 14+ may use the wheel during open studio if approved by Tyler.

  • Due to space constraints and breakable clay objects everywhere, non-member siblings of homeschool students are not permitted to hang out during studio time.

  • Yes - you can use Step Up For Students to pay for your membership!

New Member Orientation

  • EVERY new member will have an orientation on their first day in the studio. Orientations are done during instructional time - not open studio time. Please send us a text to let us know which instructional time & day you will be in so we are prepared for you. This is critical as you will learn the flow of the studio, our cleaning protocols, how to obtain clay & tools, where your shelf is, how to stage your pieces for firings, etc…

Clay

  • Clay is not included in your membership. Everyone uses a different amount of clay and we don’t want to limit your creativity! We sell Standard 112 as our studio clay body. It can be purchased for $35 per 25lb bag at your orientation & when needed throughout your membership.

  • Reclaimed clay is periodically available for $1.10lb and is pugged and de-aired. It is still recommended to wedge your clay prior to use.

  • Other cone 6 clay bodies are permitted in the studio (for hand building ONLY), however, you must reclaim it on your own and not intermingle it with our Standard 112 water buckets. Prior to using your own clay body, please talk with Tyler.

Glazes

  • You have free access to our studio-made dipping glazes. We have an interesting assortment of colors and finishes. Please attend an instructional time when using our dipping glazes for the first time.

  • We have test tiles & details about each glaze available for you to see. Pay close attention to whether a glaze runs/drips when fired. Each test tile has information written on the bottom regarding how long to dip your piece to achieve the results on the test tile. Variations occur at different intervals.

  • There are a limited number of Amaco brushing glazes available for use.

  • Our studio-made dipping glazes can also be modified to be brushing glazes. If this is an option you wish to explore, please schedule a time with Tyler - during open studio - to create & use these glazes.

  • We are working on developing studio-made underglazes for detailed work. We’ll keep you posted on progress and availability.

  • You are free to use glazes that are not from our studio. You must kiln test the glaze you wish to use on a test tile prior to glazing & firing a full piece. This will assure both you & us that the glaze performs well in our kiln & on your chosen clay body. Glazes need to be for cone 6 oxidation. Please consult with Tyler before bringing your own glazes.

Tools

  • Every potter has their favorite tools! You are welcome to bring your tools & store them on your personal shelf.

  • If you don’t have pottery tools - a basic tool kit is available for purchase at your orientation.

  • We encourage you to label all of your tools with your name. If a tool gets misplaced… we’ll know exactly whose it is & be able to place it on your shelf!

Kiln Firings

** All pieces must be less than 2’ tall and 2’ wide.

  • Bisque fires: $2.50/lb

  • Glaze fires: $3.50/lb

  • Weights will be rounded up or down to the closest pound.

  • Firing costs must be paid prior to firing. If your piece is not marked as paid, it will not enter the kiln.

  • Only pieces that are created completely at Mud Slinger Studio, with the clays and glazes approved, will be fired.

Special Notes

  • While playing with clay your clothes WILL get clay on them. All members are encouraged to wear easily washable clothing & shoes and consider bringing a washable apron with you. Your apron is NOT to be left on your shelf. Please take it home and wash it.

  • Leave the perfumes & fragrances at home please. Many people (including us) have allergies or sensitivities to artificial scents. So that everyone can enjoy clear breathing - we kindly ask that you do not wear perfume or scented anything in the studio. This includes creams, lotions & sanitizers too.

  • Please also avoid having any creams or lotions on your hands as those can transfer to the clay and can become troublesome to the clay body's chemistry.
